I won't post my actual last name since it's pretty uncommon, but the top four states are NY, PA, CA, and FL.

I would be interested in seeing percentage distributions for the more common names if available since some of the maps (e.g. Smith) look like population indices.

     Then my father's last name:

     Next my grandmother's maiden name:

     Finally my ex-girlfriend's last name:

You can notice four distinct tiers of commonality here.

Click here and then click onf "file A" for the top 1,000 sunames in the US, and you wil get an excel file of the  top 1,000 names for the excel file, by incidence and race, and you too will have the keys to the kingdom. I did an excel sort, and did a multiplication function, to get the data to pose my questions.

White was the 14th most common black name in the United States in absolute numbers. My mother's maiden name was !!!!!!! by the way.  In percentage terms, the surname with the highest percentage of blacks using that name had a percentage of 89.87% of the total using that surname.

I think revealing your mother's maiden name is dangerous - people can apply for credit cards etc.

All my real names are very common - in fact in the bangkok airport recently I was paged and met a strange man looking for another one with my name.

I won't say it online, but it's exceedingly uncommon: everyone in the US who has it is directly related to me. In northern Greece it's somewhat more common, albeit not very.

Shocked I'm in trouble then; my last name is my mother's maiden name.

It is interesting that three out of the top five surnames by % black are names of former presidents.

OK Opebo, then delete my mother's maiden name sentence from your quote, as I did from my post. I take your point. I guess one cannot be too paranoid.

And this map is out of date. It should have 4 listed for Florida. And all those people on the map are related to me by blood or marriage.

Just in case anyone had forgotten, eh?

My last name is Brown, so that should give you more than just a clue as to how popular my name is.  I've got a VERY generic name -- Jeffrey Brown.

Oh really? I have a very Argentinian name. Not only that, but I had a great-grandfather who landed at Buenos Aires when he came to the United States. It's a conspiracy, I tell you. Tongue

It doesn't seem to handle double-barreled names well. My wife's maiden name doesn't show up, but there's at least her sister who has it.

I found it; you need to enter the name without spaces. I'm not going to put it in, though; the only result was <5 in NJ, so it must be only her sister (and her if the data was collected before 2008, which it must have been). Not really surprising, although the constituent parts of the name were both pretty common.
