At any point in 1984 did Mondale/Ferraro ever stand a chance or were they doomed from the start?

Whoops posted this in the wrong section didn’t mean to post it in 2012 results

Mondale stood a chance had the election been held in 1983 when the US was mired in a recession:

By 1984, the economy was on fire and Mondale was doomed. Such is the game of electoral musical chairs

they led in a gallup poll at one point in the campaign, but it may have been an outlier.

A "minor" glimmer of hope to make the race "a race" after the first debate. Then Reagan crushed that in the second debate.

I still firmly believe that Hart would have given Reagan a race given the geographical difference, his youth and his distance from the "old fashioned Democrat" establishment.

Nope, no Democrat stood a chance given the improving economy and Reagan's charisma

Americans just weren't in any mood to throw out a third straight president/have a 5th president in less than 12 years.

Sure, in 1988, against the considerably less charismatic Bush Sr.

Without a serious scandal, no economic recovery, &/or health issues, no, they didn't stand a chance.

John Glenn would've at least made the general interesting. A bona fide American hero is hard to vote against.

He'd have still lost, of course.

Yeah, it'd certainly be a tantalizing campaign to watch, but I still don't think he'd have enough juice to actually oust Reagan.
