Unfortunately, many states didn't ask this or didn't have a statistically significant result. Of those mapped, every state except Conn. had white Catholics more Democratic than white Protestants. Could Conn. have been a statistical anomaly?

CNN has it 51-49, so I suppose it's within the margin of error.

No this isn't so odd folks.  White Catholics for the vast majority of American history were on the "outs"of society.  White Protestants were on the "ins" of society.  They have only recently become competitive thanks to the upward mobility they experienced for most of the last century that made them more amendable to "Americanism".  The upper class lace curtain class stockbroker has much less cultural allegiance to the Democratic Party than his union member father did just thirty years ago.
CT: See New Money.
We are just now seeing the "normalization" of this cultural group.

Several of those blue states should be red, but unfortunately white Hispanics (who voted about 2:1 Democratic) are arbitrarily excluded from "white". Also, I assume the question wasn't asked in Massachusetts?

As this forum has so demonstrated, "white" itself is arbitrary, so it makes sense that its exclusions would be arbitrary as well.

It was, but somehow the results weren't statistically significant enough to be shown.

Even though white Catholics probably made a majority of voters in the state? Odd.

I think of white Catholics in Connecticut being Italian/white ethnic-American "new money" types who work in finance and are basically Rick Santelli Republicans. Maybe that's why they're more Republican than the Protestants there.

Would be interested in Illinois' numbers.

I am a Catholic and live in a very Catholic area, and one observation that I have about Catholics is that there are a lot of them who are Democrats and a lot of them who are Republicans, but on both sides they are always very moderate. They usually tilt in either direction depending on priorities but can agree on generous-but-not-dependence welfare policies, pro-life, and there actually is a mix on gay marriage despite the Church's stance.

Massachusetts is probably one of the few states where the Religious Right establishment, whatever that may be, is Catholic.
