I know this one seems ridiculous, but there are apparently some "Transgendered Rights" groups who want to see this gone.

No. The chances of rape would go up, among other problems. Rid the US of the perverts (like Opebo) and maybe it could be considered.

No, altho my reasoning has nothing to do with perverts, at least directly.  Urinals are less costly for public places to install and operate, but they have no place in unisex bathrooms.

What I really find ridiculous is places where there's no urinal, just two toilets with a sink and an outer door to them each - and they're marked male and female. Wtf?

I've never seen a bathroom that contains a urinal but not a stall, so I don't see why this is an issue.

No, though private businesses should be allowed to do so if they want.

doesn't it contradict with your view that Brown v Board is agreeable?  If you buy their conclusions, then mustn't you admit that if followed to it's logical conclusion ("...separate facilities are inherently unequal...") then separate toilets are inherently unequal.

Ah, I forgot.  You're a Feminist, not an egalitarian, so it doesn't matter.  Makes sense.  Wink

The difference is that the vast majority of women do not want to share bathrooms with men, whereas blacks did want to be in the same schools as whites. So it's not like women are being discriminated against. If women hypothetically did want unisex bathrooms, then separate bathrooms would be unjust.

yes.  I was just curious about what you saw as the difference.  Actually, I don't want to have to pee in front of women either, but you could argue that if I didn't want to pee in front of blacks, asians, natives of the americas, etc., then we're back to square one.  So I'm not sure that is a valid philosophical difference.

I believe that segregating people based upon gender furthers no legitimate social objective, and I see no reason why restrooms are any exception.

Do you not think there would be some major degree of uncomfortableness? In addition, wouldn't this raise the likelihood and ease of rape (especially in, say, a deserted rest stop bathroom.)

Why not have a 'men's room', a 'women's room', and an 'other/unsure/both/neither room'? Wink.

I'm not sure how this would affect rape, and discomfiture is no exception to equal treatment.

Think a bar, where drunk men will share the bathroom with hot chicks.  Not a good idea.

Exactly, though ideally, transgendered people would be loaded onto a ship to another country and the ship would be torpedoed.

And you call yourself pro-life?

I hate to tell you all the, but males and females generally have different anatomies.  Their respective excretory systems are different.

Gender specific bathrooms recognize the biological differences.

Dudes, haven't you ever seen the Sweetest Thing? Chicks go to the bathroom to feel each other's breasts, don't you want in on that?

Howdy!

Ya know, I'm all for respecting other ideals and everything...but it just ain't possible to cater to every small need of every small subgroup of the population. It's sad, but it's how it goes...

That is such feminazi logic that it's sickening.

Why should only women decide the issue?  What if men want separate bathrooms while women want unisex bathrooms?  Why should the wants of women automatic take precedence over male views?

Such obsequience to feminazi logic by a man really borders on self-hate.

Having said that, I say keep separate bathrooms.  That's what most people want.  In any case, men and women have very different bathroom behavior - women love to go the bathroom in packs to gossip, while most men view it as a more solitary exercise, to be accompanied by a good magazine or newspaper. Smiley

As far as transgendered people go, I think they are a truly tragic phenomenon, and I feel sorry for them, but society should not have to make basic changes in the way it operates to accomodate this infinitesimal share of the population.  They need to find a way to adapt.  I don't know enough or care enough to suggest how.
