It probably sounded foolish, but what else do you expect him to say in a "political conversation?" If he essentially says "King has no chance", he hurts the Democratic Party and his own political capital.

He actually just included it in his "Democrat Wave" speech on how the democrats will win so many governorships this year. He probably shouldn't have stretched it to that extreme.

Richardson also thought in 2008 that Mitch Daniels was a number one knock off opportunity.
