Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich was quoted in a New York Times article by Katharine Q. Seelye, today, saying that:
"Senator Clinton is very competent, very professional, very intelligently moving toward the center, very shrewdly and effectively serving on the Armed Services Committee-the first New Yorker to serve on the modern Armed Services Committee since it was created in 1948. And I think any Republican who thinks she's going to be easy to beat has a total amnesia about the history of the Clintons."
He said Senator Clinton had, "the smartest American politician as her adviser," and that in 2008, "barring something I can't imagine, she will be the nominee" for president.
Mr. Gingrich added: "If we don't prove that we have better solutions, that we're in touch with reality and that we're prepared to do things on the scale that the future requires, we will not be guaranteed of beating Hillary in a tactical race because they are, as a couple, that good tactically."
He also said he thought a Democrat who supported abortion rights with some restrictions could win support among Southerners, who tend to be more conservative than other Democrats.
"You probably have to be at least against partial-term abortion", he said. "But there's a zone where you can be pro-choice, modification, that could carry the South."
