I don't mean one British newspaper calling off one letter writing campaign to one county in Ohio would have swung it, but less of the global smugness that enveloped the Democrats in 2004. Plainly, the smug disopprobrium of the world against Bush for reacting appropriately to 9/11 was not going to deter the American people from re-electing him.
