The odds of Clinton losing the Democratic nomination are probably not much higher than the actuarial odds that a woman of her age will die or have a stroke within the next 18 months.

Not exactly a one-liner, but here we go:

As a social sciences student, I have realized how much the cancer of economic thinking has spread throughout this field of study. What I hate, more than the ideological framework in itself (which is an interesting perspective in itself), is the smug, self-satisfied and downright authoritarian belief held by its proponents that their economic rationality is the only rationality, that they got it all figured out, and that everybody else is just unable to see the truth because their judgment is clouded by silly things like norms and values. It never occurs to their minds that norms and values are also part of the human experience and play an essential role in any well-functioning society, or that no sane human being has no other goal than to maximize its material interests. It's this delusion of grandeur that makes homo economicus theory one of the most dangerous ideas of the 21st century.

I'm glad you put this post in the Reservoir, because its grammar is far too atrocious to belong in the Gallery. Tongue Sorry about that.

While I agree with Antonio V's post, I won't call it a One-Liner.

It is also not an effort post, so it doesn't belong in the gallery. It is a simple truth (or maybe a couple of them).

He was very much seen as being on the right of the Republican Party just a few years ago. He (and others, such as Lindsey Graham) is only seen as moderate now because of the Tea Party infiltration.

It's true that a movie that's a "love letter to movies" seems to win Oscars at an unfair rate.  Birdman is sort of that, and sort of a cease and desist demand to movies.

Context obviously important:

Firstly, it is not a contest. Secondly, that's statistically untrue at present.

The oldest boys in Lord of the Flies were twelve. I lacked the knowledge and skill with language to post intelligently at that age, but I was definitely a better person and almost certainly had more interesting thoughts than I do today. The same is probably true for most of us.

There isn't some magical force that guides the natural flow of elections to match a "cycle". This discussion is all hogwash.

I've said a few times now that regardless of what one thinks about the way Mormons tend to get involved in politics--in terms of policy, in terms of strategy, whatever--the fact that they do have a strong tradition of dynamic, on-the-ground political involvement, and in most cases seem sincere and idealistic about it, is itself worthy of admiration. The same is true of black churches.

This is a deeply relevant quote to our present times, in which property-based suffrage is widespread.

Sorry Forum liberals: you may grasp your pearls and retreat to your fainting couches now.

It's more a matter of civilized and uncivilized as opposed to liberal or conservative.

Essentially it's total nonsense to suggest that there is a 'pure' form of any given language and that any and all dialects are perversions and distortions of it. In reality the 'pure' form of the language in question is itself a dialect.

This is exactly why no one in their right mind could support "states' rights"

And if the national government was doing something like this, would you then suddenly switch to be in favor of states rights?

If the United States was as dumb as Oklahoma, God help us.

Young Earth Creationism requires the existence of a creator that is doing everything in his power to deceive humanity into thinking the universe is old.

Also not exactly true, as was pointed out in multiple responses in the thread. But I guess engaging in actual debate is too much work for a fair share of Atlas posters.
