Which city would you move it to?

I think Kansas City would be a nice fit that would be nearer the center of population in the country.

I'm not advocating this...but say we were establishing the capital today... Where is best?  Is centrality an issue or should economic might play a role?

New York City (the largest city in the nation), Chicago (the industrial heartland of the nation), or Philadelphia (for purely historic reasons) are the only cities that I think are even remotely suitable replacements for Washington. I personally support moving the capital to Chicago.

Absolutely Philadelphia. Nothing else really comes close.
Austin could be interesting too, but perhaps too interesting.

I'm a believer in giving all people equal access to the capital... And keeping it away from Wall Street.  History doesn't play into it much.  I don't care where the founding fathers wanted it.
The more I think about it, the more a place like St. Louis, KC, or Denver makes sense.

Given that most states have relatively small and unimportant capital cities, it would be odd for the country's capital to be one of the largest cities.

Detroit is the right answer. Plenty of space.

Denver would be a good spot for the capital. It's a beautiful city and would a lot more central than DC. The current capital is quickly becoming farther and father from the center of population which makes it harder and harder for the average American to visit it.

It is far easier to arrange a trip from Honolulu to DC today than from Atlanta to DC in 1800.  Possibly 1900.

If you want to move your capital, find some sh*thole, which could really need the influx of money. Detroit is not a bad choice, but neither is a lot of other poor areas. New York would be a terrible choice, don't you people think they're obnoxious enough without being the official centre of USA.

Denver would be cool. Almost centrally located, beautiful city.

Especially because Atlanta was not yet a thing in 1800. But your point is apt. Location matters very little today, so long as it's not a remote Alaskan bushtown.

I would move it where the mean center of population is, which at the moment is in southern Missouri (in Texas County to be more precise).  Build a new city there from scratch.

I don't like the idea of the Capital in New York. The city has enough security concerns and is crazy and crowded enough as is.

Philadelphia has the historic significance and seems like it would be the best option.

No it's not.  I live in Honolulu and it's really difficult to travel to the East Coast.

Yeah the best option is 3 time zones away from the nation's biggest state.

Like I said, the best option is the mean center of population.

Denver seems like the most sensible option. "Close" to both California and Texas and within reasonable travel distance from the Chicago area. Kansas City would be a close second.

This would be awful, please no.

East St. Louis. Close to center of population, historic significance  (border of the "West"), in need of revitalisation.

Kansas City
St. Louis
Omaha
Columbia, Missouri

Lincoln, Des Moines, Springfield, IL would be good too but they are already state capitals

I like Denver but its too far west, and is already a big city and regional center.

Put it on a ship. Why does it need to be a permanent location?

No one wants to live in f[inks]ing Kansas City. You realize that hundreds of thousands of people (and their families) have to willingly live in and around whatever city is selected, right?

If we somehow needed to move the capital, I think we should do what we did the first time and build an entirely new city.

No one would want to live in Washington either if it wasn't the nation's capital.
