Nominations came out today, seen here: http://oscar.go.com/nominees

Very happy that Grand Budapest Hotel and Wes Anderson are finally getting some love from the Academy, but the snubbing of Selma in multiple categories and especially Gone Girl (which was a masterpiece, and both critically successful and very financially successful) is really egregious. The love for really mediocre films like The Imitation Game and American Sniper is also stupid.

'Oscar nominated Eddie Redmayne' = something that should never be. Americans need to stop cooing over posh British people, it's ingratiating and embarrassing.

Well he's also nominated for a BAFTA award... Tongue

Agree with the above two posters. Boyhood is so good because it's "boring"; it's like watching a documentary or something, it's just so amazingly real. You never feel like you're watching a fictional story. There are no big melodramatic moments, no sudden shocking twists, no cathartic speeches that wrap everything nicely together. Just a bunch of moments from a boy's life, with beautiful acting from Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette. I can't wait to watch it again.

(Gone Girl is still my favorite film of 2014 though.)

It did have some moments (mexican guy) that were melodramatic but apart from that it was just so real.

Yeah, that scene was the only one that struck me as unrealistic.

Okay, after having seen both Birdman and Theory of Everything in the past 24 hours, Redmayne definitely, definitely deserves to win best actor. Keaton is fine and obviously I like him a lot as an actor, but Redmayne as Hawking is really an amazing performance.

Birdman beat out Boyhood at the Producer's Guild awards last night. Very troubling. Birdman is not terrible and I enjoyed it, but Boyhood is just on a totally different level from it.

Academy Award Winner Eddie Redmayne... heh.

He deserves it IMO. I've seen all the Best Actor nominated performances at this point.

I will be very disappointed if Birdman wins. Still hoping for a hilarious surprise Grand Budapest Hotel win due to vote splitting. But this BAFTA win should give Boyhood some badly needed momentum.

Also Redmayne winning the BAFTA, while not surprising because he's British and playing a British guy, should be the final nail in Keaton's coffin.

A lot of people talk about "Oscar bait", and they usually mention biopics, but just as common are these kinds of fun and well-made but ultimately not very deep self-referential films about the film industry, like Birdman. Same thing with Argo and The Artist. All three are going to be forgotten in a decade.

Boyhood is a masterpiece. It will endure. The Academy will look foolish in the future if they pick Birdman over it.

Last year's race was closer, from what I remember. I think this race is lean Birdman at this point, while last year was closer to toss-up/tilt 12 Years a Slave.

Very interesting theory, but it would surprise me. Boyhood voters seems to be the type to go BH 1, BM 2 or 3, whereas Birdman voters are more likely to keep BH low, like 6 or lower. It's hard not to enjoy Birdman, but if you enjoy both, I'd imagine Boyhood is more likely to get the nod. If not, you probably disliked it pretty strongly.

It's highly likely everyone knows the politics involved and all the BH and BM voters are intentionally putting the other at 7th. Whiplash and Grand Budapest Hotel voters are likely going to second place Boyhood in support of independent filmmaking. Meanwhile, Harvey Weinstein is apparently on a tour to white guilt people to vote for Selma as their 2nd choice, which could change things.

Damn, I wish there were an Atlas forum equivalent for Oscar politics!

Man, if the studio hadn't completely f[inks]ed up with getting screeners out, I think Selma would have swept the awards. Look at that standing ovation for the best song speech!
