Australia is to compete at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Organisers invited the country to participate as part of the contest's 60th anniversary celebrations.

"It's a daring and at the same time incredibly exciting move. It is our way of saying let's celebrate this party together!" contest supervisor Jon Ola Sand said.

Australia will be fast-tracked to the final, which will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 23 May.

A total of 40 countries will now compete in the contest.

Organisers said Australia had been given a wildcard for the final "to not reduce the chances" of the semi-final participants and because of the "one-off nature" of its participation.

The show has a long tradition of being broadcast in Australia by broadcaster SBS.

Also:

If Australia ends up winning, the contest next year will still be held somewhere in Europe.

Silly idea. If they were to invite a non-European country as a "bonus contestant" (apart from Israel that is already competing for stupid reasons) they should go for a neighbouring country like Morocco or Lebanon.

Apparently because Aussies are the biggest Song Contest fans out there and it's the 60th anniversary.

Still odd even though it does have more appeal here than in other non-European parts of the world.

I think it's incredibly stupid to allow that.

Haha I suggested this as a joke in the Australia General Discussion thread and now it's actually happening. The Queen is our Head of State and it's incredibly popular here so I'm all for it.

Oh shush to the haters.

Australia has been loyal fans of Eurovision for decades. This is a ONCE-OFF to celebrate the 60th anniversary.

Calm down. We won't win.

I think that someone mistook Australia for Austria when sending out the invites.
