Are there any states, that, at first glance, seem like they would or should be a certain affiliation, but aren't? Like if you asked a know-nothing on the street, they'd say it's that way.

For instance:

Wisconsin and Iowa seem red
Louisiana seems blue

WV seems blue.
MO seems blue.

PA seems red.
WI seems red.

For the longest time the above two were the case

FL should be blue.

No, I genuinely don't get it. States that "seem" red or blue based on what? Demographics? Local politics? Geography? Gut feel?

These are non-Atlas colors, right?

In that case.....
Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Iowa seem red (in some respects, unique for each of them)
Arizona and Utah (assuming one didn't know about Mormonism) seem blue (both are rather urban for such conservative states)

Pretty much any state seems red if you don't drive through a major city. And every state seems blue if you just fly into the cities.

When we were in Appalachia I told the people I was with that it was voting heavily Republican and they were shocked.

People also tend to think it is really weird that Connecticut votes Democratic.

I always try to tell people that there is more to political trends than income, but I guess they don't believe me. If they would only look around to the plethora of loud liberals and Democratic yard signs in the rich Chicago neighborhoods as well as in Evanston and Highland Park and Oak Park.

States like Arkansas, West Virginia, and Louisiana just seem Democrat to me.

States like Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire seem like they should be Republican.

Oregon always seemed like it would be Republican.

Iowa seems Republican too.

Indiana seems small town Democrat, but apparently not.

Have you been to Indiana?

WV is white, rural, and religious with a lot of poor, so it has every earmark, hallmark, culture, type of people to seem Republican. Really interesting that its transition has been slow.

New Hampshire, a little bit of an enigma, seems Democratic.

California seems like a third world hellscape if you don't drive through a major city.

California is so urban that a lot of the most conservative cities in America, like Bakersfield, are also located in the state even though the state as a whole is ultra-liberal.

Alaska feels blue...bordering both Socialist Canada and Russia and being a stone's throw away from the Democratic Pacific Northwest.

If you go to Lawrence, Kansas, you might well feel like you're in a Democratic state. Same with Austin, Texas. For similar reasons.

It's not always true that visiting the major city in an area makes you feel like you're in a Democratic state. I've visited Omaha, Nebraska multiple times and never felt like I was in a Democratic state.

I drove through it once; I don't know much about the state.

You'll see a lot of billboards that say "Hell is Real and Jesus is Real" and "Guns Save Lives." It's also not impoverished like WV and KY, which lead people to believe that even the very Christian people in those states are voting Democrat. Then when you get to the Indy suburbs you feel like you're in suburban Houston with huge developments springing up, all very new money, culture-less suburbs and such. Incredibly Republican-feeling.

Indiana is dyed-in-the-wool Republican and I have never felt any other way.

Florida really should be a blue (or Atlas Red) state, and vice versa for Oregon.
