From The Indy Star

Although the $6.8 million in U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh's campaign fund is more than most of his colleagues have on hand, Bayh continues to cross the country to raise more, according to his most recent campaign disclosure report.

The Indiana Democrat won't say whether he's preparing for a potential presidential bid in 2008. But he apparently doesn't mind joking about the possibility.

Before talking Tuesday at the Mortgage Bankers Association conference in Washington, Bayh was introduced by Michael Petrie, the chairman of the group and president of P/R Mortgage and Investment Corp. of Carmel.

Bayh told Petrie he liked his title.

"A president from Indiana," Bayh said. "It kind of has a little resonance to it."

I'm becoming worried. Far too few far-leftists have announced, while moderates are jumping on board. I fear that we may end up with a large field of moderates that gets trounced by the far-leftists (i.e. Hillary.)

I agree with Alcon, but I don't think Hillary will run. As for Bayh, not that's a frightening possibility. Can you imagine a far-left extremist like him being that close to the White House?

Far leftists didn't vote for the Iraq war, and Condi Rice.

That guy is so extreme right-wing, he went to Puerto Rico to protest the military bombing someone.

Go Bayh! Maybe the Dems will finally realise that being liberal doesn't win elections... but probably not.

Hopefully whoever wins the nomination will be a governor not a senator.

and hopefully whoever that governor will be, that he will have a little more than a single term to whatever political experience he may have.  Mark Warner simply doesn't cut it.

The moderates might not have to fear Hillary in '08.  Given the campaign finance scandal that surrounds her, she may be a non-factor by the time the primaries roll around.  Hell, if the scandal ignites sooner rather than later, she may not be a factor in the '06 senate race.

A18, what basis are you calling Sen Bayh a "far-left socialist?"  He's not nearly as far out there as the rest of his party.

Bayh seems like a moderate Democrat to me.  I really hope he runs because I very well might vote for him.  Evan Bayh would make a very good President.

Philip likes to mention this whenever Bayh's name pops up.  He's yet to actually justify it.

Bayh is quite possibly the closest you could get to an embodiment of the nation's politics as a whole - not too liberal and not too conservative. I think his track record of being a solid moderate Democrat, who repeatedly wins state-wide races, from conservative Indiana is testament to that

He'd make a fine president

His voting for the bankruptcy bill, the Bush tax cuts, and NCLB really piss me off.

But I'd still much rather have him as president than any Republican.

Bayh voted against the Bush tax cuts.

Voted NO on $350 billion in tax breaks over 11 years. (May 2003)
Voted NO on cutting taxes by $1.35 trillion over 11 years. (May 2001)

Bayh voted against the Bush tax cuts.

Thanks for correcting me. I saw that on another site and assumed it to be true.
