Well, I had to ask this. Smiley

My favorite Senator last thought of running for President in 1996. He turned it down knowing he would lose. I need to ask though, could Charles Grassley be nominated for President and perhaps win the race?

Yes he'll be 75 years old, and that is probably too old to be elected President. He is a Social and Fiscal Conservative. He is a mamber of The Family a Christian Values group that has struggled to keep prayer in schools and organizes the National Day of Prayer every year. Grassley votes the Conservative line and was reelected with 70% of the vote in 2004.

So how could my favorite Senator fare in the 2008 Republican Primary?

Yeah, i've never said that to any of your Santorum in 2008 posts. Smiley

The difference: Santorum is more likely to run for President than for Grassley to even be seriously mentioned for President or VP.  Wink

If Grassley was younger he would be a great choice for President!

I am also glad he didn't try for the GOP nomination in '96 because that would have been humiliating for Grassley to lose Iowa to Clinton. Sad

His time has passed.  If he was say, 10 years younger he would probably be a great candidate.  He's a solid Midwestern conservative.  A little boring, though.

I think he should concentrate on keeping the bastards on the finance committee in line.

Unfortunately, Grassley is too old.  I would definitely vote for him if he were young enough.

I like Grassley, but I don't think he would be able to run a successful campaign.

Hmmm he'd be a nice VP though, he'd have a good chance at carrying mid-west states. Especially for a moderate candidate.

If any Iowan is going to get a P or VP spot, it'd be Jim Nussle. He'd need to graduate to the senate at least first though.

As has already been said, Grassley is too old.  Even Reagan, who was the oldest elected president so far, was 69 at the time.  But 75?  If he won a second term he'd be 83 by the time he left office.  Better make sure he picks a good VP.

He would have a solid conservative base, however.  And he'd most likely take MN and WI, as well as IA of course.

PBrunsel will correct me if I'm wrong on this, but actually, it looks more likely that he's going to run for governor.  That would put him in better position than Senator anyway for running for Pres or VP.

Nussle is running for Governor and stands a good chance to get elected. He could be a good nominee in 2012 (if a Democrat wins) or 2016.

Nussle's to conservitive (though he might be governor).
I wouldn't vote for Grassley, and i don't like him that much, but he seems like a good guy.
Keystone Phil, the way you said  grassley won't run; made it sound like you were just bashing him.
(i dubot that's what you ment).  Though Grassley is to old in my opinion, i think PBrunsell has every right to float the idea and advocate it.
