Hummm... I think the only candidates who could have been serious challengers in 1996 where Powel and Alexander... but I think in the end it would have been a very tough election for both Powel and Clinton... neither would have enjoyed a landslide, however i think a very close win for Powel is most likely with a landslide in 2000 over the Democratic candidate John Kerry [chuckle]...

O and Powell is black.

You seriously think America is ready to elect the first Black president?

it isn't who would win, it is who would you vote for, I personally think Clinton would have been re-elected anyway.

Absolutely.  Just because the nation won't elect Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Lewis Farakkan or other left-wing extremists does not mean that the nation is racially biased against African-american candidates.  Powell in a landslide.

…I agree as with a White, Asian or Hispanic candidate so long as the candidate can inspire people to vote for them and seems both moderate and competent then of course a African-American candidate can win…

I doubt that it will ever pass to Powel now, however I expect that if anyone can do amongst the present stars of either party its Harold Ford…when he runs in 06 I really need to work for him, that would be one hell of a race to work for… ahhh…..

They are not African. they are Americans. Smiley

I don't care what party they are from, I have a hard time seeing a Black presidential candidate being elected anytime soon. My comment had nothing to do with party affiliation.

I'd agree. Many white southerners would refuse to vote for Powell, and for many blacks, he was not on the same political wavelength. I see him taking say Georgia, but loosing Alabama.

It could have changed the voting patterns of the South possibly swinging them back to the Democrats as Republicans may lose credibility over it, it could also swing the black vote to the republicans and away from the democrats.

For blacks, well for most of them, maybe not all, It's party FIRST, race second.

Many Blacks see him and Rice as traitors.

If I can get Powell's home state and black voter registration records for states I could possibly predict the outcome, I think Powell would do quite well in New England and out West while Clinton would do well in the South.

Powell may have won but anyone who sees a landslide is living in cloud cuckoo land.

I think Reps would pretty much sweep the west and mid west, Dems would sweep the south.

Dems and reps would split New England and states like PA, OH, MI and those around there would be tossups.

Clinton would have picked up MS, AL, SC, NC, IN and VA.
Powell would have held onto Florida and done well out west.
Just gut feeling

Clinton was way too popular and successful to be voted out of office.  He would have beaten Powell, although Powell would have done better than Dole.

Powell would have defeated Gore in 2000, though.

On all the projections I’ve run… I can see anyway that (based on the 1996 results by state and the trends of the time and in the 1992 and then the 2000 elections) that would allow Powel to win while having to contest the south… Powel can win WI, OR, ME, NH, VT, KT, MO, LA and still loses even with Clinton not picking up a single southern state (which he probably would have in the case of a Clinton v Powel race)… simply put I think Powel could have won but it would have been tough, Clinton was a very strong candidate in 1996 and he came remarkably close to a Reagan style blow-out with Powel as I have said it would have been close but in the end I think Clinton has to have the advantage in any race in 1996 his strongest opponent was probably Alexander…

Powel could have carried north new England, however his chances of winning NY would have been very slim, in order to win Powel would have to swing California, which would be tough but as we have see with a moderate (dare I say liberal?) Republican candidate elections in CA can be won, added to this CA is also far less solidly Democratic than NY or the North east, it would take a lot of effort and he would have to work from the position of underdog in the region but Powel could have won CA in 1996 or 2000…

New York maybe?  Born there and spent at least his life through college there.   After that he's going all over the place, Vietnam, Korea, Georgia, Gemany...

As to who would win...Clinton probably, in a close race.  Clinton would have won most of the south, and Poweel would have cut into his majorities in the mid-west.
