Who do you think Ted Cruz should or would pick as his running mate, were he to win the Republican nomination?

If governor: Walker
If Senator: Cotton or Lee

EDIT: Pence or Snyder could work too

Pence or Kaisch. Someone to beef up a record, since he's a tad thin on foreign policy achievements, apart from the generic 'Islamic extreme fascist radicals' stuff.

Heck if he had sense he'd go with Huntsman, but he's a RINO

Huntsman will not be on a national GOP Ticket until at least 2020 due to his support of SSM.

While the Leadership may be able to shove "SSM is settled law" into the fairly irrelevant national platform as early as 2016, the republican base will not tolerate, under any circumstances, having an SSM Supporter on the national ticket until 2020, and maybe not even then.

Haley would be my guess. Walker or Pence would be solid picks too.  Cruz won't pick a moderate running mate. His biggest selling point to conservatives is ideological purity.  Huntsman, Ayotte, etc. wouldn't be considered.

The base always rallies around the nominee. Romney didn't lose 2012 because the conservatives stayed home. They won't care about the VP nominee so long as Cruz tops the ticket. Cruz is running because he wants to win, not for sh*ts and giggles.

Of course he is running to win. You think Cruz/Huntsman would be stronger than Cruz/Walker? Nobody outside of Atlas believes Huntsman belongs anywhere near a GOP ticket. He doesn't connect with voters and his smugness is borderline obnoxious. And he clearly despises the base. Haley is the most likely, because she's charismatic, a governor, a woman, a minority, conservative and term limited.

If Trump actually makes it to the debates, I can see Cruz and Trump becoming fast friends over the course of the campaign...

this would be the shortlist:

1. a gun with an American flag draped over it
2. a 48-year-old high school drop-out from Arkansas on disability who legally changed his name to "Pro-Life Constitution"
3. ted cruz's wife wearing a full-body ted cruz latex suit

Cotton would be a suicidal pick. Cruz is going to sweep the south anyway, he'd need to shore up support in the midwest. I could see Portman as a possibility.

Portman is a sensible politician. He'd never get on a ticket with Cruz, especially considering that he could be running in 2020.

The party obviously has no love for him. If he wants the institutional support and mainstream money, he will have to pick someone they trust like Kasich.

BTW, the same would be true of Paul, Huckabee, Carson or any other non-mainstreamer.

Best bet for a guy who runs against Washington, but has burned bridges with the establishment, is a reelected Governor. It won't come with Washington baggage, won't piss off donors, and won't create the impression that the #2 on the ticket is not ready to lead.

Rick Snyder, John Kasich, Tim Pawlenty, Scott Walker, Bill Haslam, Terry Branstad and Mikki Haley are all good matches.

Susanna Martinez would make it a ticket with two Hispanics, which could have demographic appeal.

I suspect that's the only way to get Ted in the bedroom.

Marco Rubio would make sense. It would be a ticket of two young senators with ethnic backgrounds and right-wing credentials. The major downside is a Cruz/Rubio ticket may be too ethnic sounding for your average Huckabee/Santorum voter.

Doesn't Nikki Haley have some stuff that would come out during vetting?

Plus half the battle is picking someone to work with for 8 years, Clinton on paper appeared a good choice for 2008, as did Gore however it wouldn't of worked for Obama.

The issue with VP choices is that they're talked up by the press, and political hacks but beyond that unless they're Palin or Eagleton you're fine

John Kasich seems like a reasonable enough pick.

You accuse me of being part of the "Atlas bubble" but I find that you are the one stuck in the Tea Party bubble of electoral ignorance. What about the corruption and ethics issues surrounding Nikki Haley? Just because she is "young and charismatic" doesn't mean she will be anywhere near the ticket. Come the general election, we Republicans no longer count. We can unite around the nominee and win, or we can stay home and lose. There are no other options. Outreach to independents is crucial, and a John Kasich/Jon Huntsman/Rob Portman type is what the party needs.
