Quite a major figure in postwar German culture, I understand.

Well... um... I'm not so sure if that's entirely the right way of putting it given certain things, though I get what you're trying to say.

A man who lived it, learned it, hated it, and did his best to avoid it happening again.

A true FF.

Pretty sad news. I enjoyed the Danzig Trilogy very much, especially the first book which is obviously the most acclaimed and blah, blah, blah. Well, Cat and Mouse saddened me somehow and Dog Years was a bit too long (I remember a guy obsessed with Heidegger, among other things). I borrowed that biography entitled Peeling the Onion from the public library.

Embarrassingly, I haven't read him yet. Pretty controversial figure but certainly an important man. My mother was a big fan as I recall.

FF, I didn't quite fancy his work (always preferred the Heinrich Böll style to literature), but truly one of the last  of poets who were 'alternative legislatures'. RIP

As a Pole, I have a deep sense of appreciation for his help in achieving the Polish-German reconciliation.
