It's a Dan Jones poll, which routinely overpolls Republicans (they had Matheson losing to Mia Love in 2012 and Doug Owens losing by double-digits in 2014), but still a bad sign for Utah Dems. And it becomes less and less likely that Matheson will run for anything at all in 2016.

Almost seems like senate would be a safer bet. This is just one poll though, but unless Herbert has an incredible scandal he looks set for reelection. I could be wrong but I do believe his governorship has been very steady and uncontroversial.

Unsurprising Utah would choose a popular Republican over a popular Democrat. The reason Matheson would have a chance against Lee is because his approvals are mediocre.

Basically this. Also, didn't Matheson retire because his seat was really hard to keep even though it had the most democratic lean of the state? The way I see him winning would be that Lee's popularity keeps low.

Matheson is currently a lobbyist for a controversial student loan firm. I don't know why anyone thinks he's going to return to politics any time soon.

Because people are bored and want a competitive Utah election.

Utah politics are very, very boring. Democrats keep losing.
