Results so far:
ANC 69%
DA   14%
IFP   05%
NNP  02%
Turnout: 77%
58% of votes counted
---
I'm actually quite pleased with these results:

1). Although I'm no fan of Mbeki, I am a fan of the ANC.
2). Both the ANC and the DA have gained votes.
3). The NNP was decimated!!! Smiley
4). The IFP had a bad election Smiley
5). The ANC may have beaten the IFP in Kwa-Zulu Natal (fingers crossed)
6). Despite a certain outcome, turnout was far higher than most western countries.
7) 69% means that the ANC don't need to co-operate with smaller parties... hopefully moving government leftward.

Well...I think South Africa needs to readjust itself to a competitive party system, right now it isn't really working that well. But this was expected.

I prefer the DA to ANC, but I have no real problem with the ANC specifically. (Well, they could be a little less friendly to Arafat). But I do hope the DA broadens it's base to become a truly multiethnic party and becomes truly competitive in national elections. I son't like Mbeki, who is a liar and a bad one at that.

The NNP sounds awful, they got what they deserved. And Inkatha does no one any good either.

90% counted:

ANC: 70%
DA: 13%
IFP: 7%
NNP: 2%
---
ANC lead in all provinces... but may not get overall majorities in Kwa Zulu-Natal and Western Cape.

The 2 previous elections the ANC also scored about 60-65%. Did they cooperate then with smaller parties?

Yes... they had to. If they get over 66%, I think they are allowed to change the constitution

Wake me up when one of the parties is able to obtain more than just the votes of one race.

The DA won votes from both Whites and "Cape" Coloureds.

What changes of the constitution are expected?  The way you, Al, say it, makes it seem like not much can be done now without changing the constitution.  Are there laws that can be passed now by simple majority vote?  Will the ANC-backed changes to the constitution perhaps create an enviornment where Black voters will be more comfortable voting for a party other than the ANC, perhaps starting a new party that supports the Constitutional changes but differs with the ANC on other issues?

Thanks to anyone who attempts to answer these questions.

Sincerely,

Kevin Lamoreau

I think at the moment, a two thirds majority is needed to pass things through the SA Parliament.
This has meant that the ANC has had to co-operate with parties such as the IFP and the NNP (urgh), which swings government to the right (not what South Africa needs right now).
Hopefully the ANC will now be able to get more done for poor people.

The ANC has turned South Africa into a rathole.

They are the single most destructive force in any Demcoratic country in the world right now.

The only reason they win is because the blacks in South Africa are too pissed off to think straight.

Hardly.  But remember that it was DeKlerk, not the ANC, that dismantled apartheid.

What bothers me is that because of Nelson Mandela's incompetence, a generation of children in South Africa will grow up too illiterate to read this message.

South Africa's a horrible mess - everyone's leaving who can.  In other words the whites.

ANC did a lot of good things. The current leadership under Mbeki is disastrous though.

Mbeki's a fool. Hopefully now he doesn't need to co-operate with the small parties he will actually LISTEN TO HIS VOTERS

I also think that one-party domination is a certain way to ruin, no matter what the party is originally. I do hope that the DA can become a credible opponent eventually, they aren't that bad are they? They were right on race anyway, which should give them a chance with black voters in the long run.

All Al has are sarcastic rants.  The ANC has destroyed South Africa.  Their behavior is indefensible.

When I point out that the ANC has destroyed the school system, he tells me to "grow up".  He never acknowledges the problem or rebuts the charge.

Why do some people refuse to accept reality?  Why the initiation of personal attacks in place of honest debate?
