Embarrassed by his near defeat at the hands of a virtually unknown state senator in the 1920 Election, President Hiram Johnson's second term would be further marred by revelations that members of the president's cabinet, including Secretary of the Treasury Warren G. Harding and Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall, had taken bribes from oil companies based in Wyoming and California. While Johnson was more successful in other areas of policy, most notably passing a ban on child labor with the support of Congressional Populists, the so-called "Teapot Dome" Scandal would cast a shadow over Johnson and the American Party.

After the Democrats and Populists made large gains in the 1922 Midterms, Johnson decided against seeking a third term in 1924. The front runners at the American National Convention are Vice President Calvin Coolidge, who has managed to distance himself from Teapot Dome, and Secretary of State Robert M. La Follette, who has not been as lucky. Former Governor Herman Farris of Missouri is also in the running and is calling for a new Prohibition Law. Meanwhile, Al Smith is once again seeking the Democratic nomination after his near miss in the 1920 Election, which remains the strongest performance by any Democrat since Grover Cleveland. Having been elected Governor of New York in 1922, Smith is seen as the front runner for the nomination, though he is being challenged by California Congressman William G. McAdoo.

Both former President Debs and former President Bryan declined to seek the presidency in 1924, depriving the Populists of their two most prominent candidates. New York Congresswoman Eleanor Roosevelt also declined to contest the nomination, despite much speculation that she could become the next Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Instead, the three front runners at the People's National Convention are Governor Charles W. Bryan, brother of the former president; Senator Burton K. Wheeler, a noted progressive who gained prominence during the push to ban child labor; and Congressman Upton Sinclair, who supports the nationalization of the oil industry in response to Teapot Dome.

Upton Sinclair would be the perfect choice to run on a strong anti-corruption platform. He has my vote.

Sinclair, but I could've been persuaded to Wheeler, LaFollete or McAdoo too.

McAdoo was one of the KKK's allies...

Yes, but that's under very different circumstances such as 1876 ruining things.

1876 didn't happen the same way, actually, it opened up Women's Suffrage with effective civil rights. I highly doubt the KKK has any presence in this timeline, and without that, there's not much reason to hate McAdoo

I hope all the Al Smith supporters do the responsible thing and vote for Sinclair in the next round to keep Coolidge out.

Due to Reconstruction being significantly more successful than in OTL, the KKK is not a noteworthy organization ITTL, either in the South or nationally. Pockets of racist sentiment do exist, but they are a distinct minority and have virtually no political clout beyond the local level (hence why South Carolina has been reliably Populist since the 1890s).

Coolidge, Smith, and Sinclair have won. The GE will be up in a moment.
