Republicans narrowly.

However, 2006 might prove to give a tiny majority in the Senate to the Democrats.

I was actually going over the possible outcomes earlier this evening and it is almost impossible for the Democrats to get a majority. They'd need an insane amount of pickups and would probably have to have a Republican switch. They will not have a majority.

I've got a new thread on the 110th Congress Stats under Congressional Elections.

I agree with you, Phil.  THe Dems cannot get a majority, especially since the Republicans have a 10 seat majority (Jim Jeffords voting Democrat) in the 109th Congress.

The Republicans will retain the House and Senate in 2006. However,  the Democrats have a good chance in 2008 after years of failed Republican leadership.

Democrats should be able to pick up 2-4 seats in 2006 but they won't have a real chance for the majority until 2008.

What seats and with what candidates. The only likely pickup is PA. In MT they have an outside shot and in VA and RI only with the right candidates (Warner and Langevin). That's four if they get lucky with everything.

Remember that 2002 the GOP have more Senators up. Whether this has any inpact, I don't know.

PA, RI, MT, TN, MO, VA (if Warner runs) and maybe even ME (if Tom Allen runs) are all competitive for Dems. Of course, the Repubs will also have a shot to pick up some Democratic seats.

I'll be generous and give the Dems all the other seats except TN. The Dems aren't going to break 45% there.

I see the best chance for the Democrats of regaining the majority will be the 2010 mid-terms, unless they make big gains in the next two elections.

I don't know if we can retake the Senate. I think we can pick up a few seats in 2006, and see how it goes from there in 2008.

Independent.  They will hold the majority in Congress in 2008.

Reid said it himself last week that it would take a miracle in order for the Democrats to regain control in 2006.

The Republicans will maintain their majority, but it will shrink a bit.

Given the recent realignment, I'm sure the Republicans will grow their majority over the next several cycles.

It's bad enough that our party probably won't even have our first senator in 2008, but at least we could have our name spelled correctly on the poll.

So we can look forward to an increased national debt, increased gas prices, increase health care costs, and increased poverty? WOOHOO!

debt - possibly.  Give the President line item veto powers, and you'll begin to see some of these huge funding plans begin to be cut down in half (ie - transportation funding bill).

gas prices - they're gonna go up no matter who is in power until the nation itself changes

health costs - they're gonna go up no matter who is in power until the concept of insurance is changed and law suit awards become capped

poverty - depends . . . the raised the annual income figure for the poverty line, so we would need to go back and either see how many would have been considered to be in poverty using the old level, or revise the historic figures to compare with the new level.  Looking at raw figures will skew everything and not show the truth (something that talking heads on both sides love to do on a daily basis).

Total control of all three branches of government by one single party is never a good thing, no matter which party it is.

Agreed.

Ideally there should be split control in the three branches, but there's no way to force that to happen.  The Executive and Legislative branches are decided by the voters and the Judicial, for the most part, is decided by the Executive and Legislative.  So, there is no way to regulate who has control or not.
