he is a solid progressive and is young-ish.

I like him, but Hillary won't need to court the base that much.

LOLOL. The guy who was almost defeated by a political neophyte would be a terrible pick.

You have a thing for losers or near-losers?

I voted "No" but upon further reflection it's a great choice. Many of the "red" states are lost to Clinton anyway, but the Shumlin pick might neutralize any Green effort in New England (possibly even holding NH for Clinton) and it would certainly energize the base, as well as young voters.

Plus, the second time he was supposed to win big. He won by a point.

I am pretty sure that the Green Party effort will come from how many progressives flip from Bernie to the Green. Could be 1% of the vote this time, which could translate to 2% for NH or 3% for Maine.

lol at the idea that Hillary needs Shumlin to possibly hold New Hampshire.

Considering Shumlin can barely hold Vermont, something tells me he wouldn't help very much in New Hampshire.

the point is:  he *didnt* lose.

no american would care...or even know...that he barely won reelection in a heavily republican year due to obama's poor approval numbers.

This is still Vermont, after all. A state in which Obama is very popular and that he won by 36 points. Shumlin on the other hand, well, he won by 1.

we all know governor's race are the least partisan.

a big reason why a republican can compete in vt.  bottom line:  it wouldnt hurt his veep chances one bit.

I'm pretty sure Obama's approval numbers have always been great in Vermont.

I'm not saying she "needs" Shumlin to win NH. I'm saying in a close race with a considerable Green challenge, a progressive VP might provide enough of a cushion to make NH utterly safe.

Jim Douglas won in Vermont but I don't see any Republicans putting him on the ticket.

A decent enough Governor, however, I doubt very much that Hillary does what Bill did and picks a running mate from the neighboring state.

Shumlin does not have the gravitas at this point in time, at least, to be considered as a credible VP pick.

He really would bring nothing to the ticket that many much more credible candidates wouldn't bring.

So overall, not a great pick.

I'm still conflicted about the poll. It seems to be both "typical waltermitty" and "bad pick."

the point is:  he *didnt* lose.

It's not what Americans know, it's what it indicates about his political skills.

People in Missouri and Vermont do. He brings classic credentials.
