There are 31 Republicans currently serving as Governors of states. Out of that 31, who are the top 5 that you think are "most likely" to be credible presidential candidates in the next election where there's (aside from 2016) where there's no Republican incumbent? (So either 2020 or 2024).

I've had a sense for a while now that Haslam will eventually want something bigger than being a Governor.  I suspect that Corker retires in 2018 to run for Governor, and Haslam runs for Senate then.  In 2024 (or 2020 if the GOP loses in 2016), he could be a top candidate.  He has three-fifths approval from Democrats and two-thirds approval from Tea Partiers (I'm not sure how both of those are possible), while having a nearly 75% overall approval rating right now.  Granted, national Democrats are a bit different than Tennessee ones (Jim Cooper still refuses to vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker/Minority Leader).

I could easily see Martinez, Baker, Rauner, or Hogan becoming serious prospects for winning the presidency if they choose to run.

Rauner no and Larry Hogan they will be one term govs.  The likely scenario is Martinez being in some fashion a VP.

Sandoval broke GOP platform not to raise taxes. Baker isnt a natl figure.

So what?  He's gonna be a rock star in the party, IMO.

My guesses are Walker, Kasich, Sandoval, Martinez and Ducey.

Walker and Kasich can benefit from the publicity of a solid presidential bid this time. Both would also be plausible veeps in 2016, which means they could run in 2023.

Sandoval has a great record in New Mexico, and could have an appeal to a party that lost in 2016.

Martinez is a dream veep candidate.

Ducey was elected the most recently, so he stands the best chance of holding elected office in 2022. Before he was Governor of Arizona, he was CEO of a famous company (Coldstone Creamery.)

As for honorable mentions, Snyder's establishing a national profile and has a credible background. He hasn't pissed off the base, or doen anything to be unelectable.

Baker, Rauner and Hogan just got elected in their late 50s, so their window may be limited. Rauner is a wealthy big-state Governor, so if someone convinces him that he could be President he might give it a go. Hogan handled the Baltimore riots well. However, he is relatively moderate and not very wealthy. Charlie Baker may be too moderate.

Haley's young and ambitious.

Scott's not a great campaigner, but might run anyway as a rich guy from a big swing state.

Haslam's main issue is that he's a white southern guy in a party that has to appeal elsewhere.

Snyder/Sandoval/Kasich/Martinez/Haslam

Probably in that order. If Kasich doesn't win in 2016, even as a three-time winner in Ohio he would be a little old in 2020/2024.

Martinez is dramatically overrated. She may run, she may even win the nomination, but I have a very hard time ever seeing her as president. It's Mother Jones, but I highly recommend this article for anyone who sees her as a juggernaut in Republican politics. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/04/governor-susana-martinez-new-mexico-2016
