Where the Confederate flag is allowable
1. Private property
2. Museums
3. Historical Reenactments

Where the Confederate flag is NOT allowable
1. Any government building whatsoever
2. Any state-issued license plates or other government items

This should be a relatively straightforward approach, in my opinion

What about Mississippi having the Confederate flag as past of their state flag?

And the Florida state flag?

This is reasonable. Now if only we could get the GOP to stop ignoring this issue.

Anything that's owned by the government shouldn't be named after or show resemblance to anything from the Confederacy, besides for history purposes in a museum or a re-enactment.

Does a cemetery or outdoors civil war memorial count as a "government building"? Because I remember 15 years ago South Carolina took the confederate flag off of their government building and added it to a civil war memorial and yet for some reason The Atlantic and other fire-eaters keep talking about how terrible it is that this super scary piece of cloth is allowed at said Civil War memorial.

I think we'd vote to change it this time if we got another chance. 2000 was forever ago.

Both are actually based on the Spanish Cross of Burgundy.

Because we want a symbol of racism and white supremacy to be removed we are suddenly communists? Do you even know the meaning of the word?

I suppose you, clearly being a radical libertarian, believe that the South was justified in the Civil War because "muh states' rights."

Dude ... TNF IS a Communist. I've read posts where TNF says this. Leon Trotsky is TNF's frickin signature. My comment was limited to TNF. And yes, I do think it is adorable when a Communist's first reaction to anything is that the State should militantly force people to adopt their position. No discussion. No compromise. No anything. Do what I say or else. You know ... forcing people. The actual language of TNF's post ... the one and only one I quoted.

Just because you don't like my support of human freedom expressed in another thread doesn't mean I'm targeting you or anything.

I assumed it was directed at the people who support the position of taking down the flag.

Oh no. I understand why many don't like that the flag gets to fly over a civil war memorial and while I disagree I (usually) don't mind agreeing to disagree as I don't even live in South Carolina. Glad this is cleared up though. Have a nice evening.

It should be removed from state grounds altogether. The Confederate veterans memorial should have an American flag. Those men were victims of the treason of the slave-holding class and should be acknowledged as such.

Museums and historical reenactments only. Any other presence of the abhorrent racist and traitorous flag should be promptly dealt with by a drone strike.

There's also that confederate star above the "Arkansas" that is referenced in some law that the "first black President" signed as governor.

The original Hocker design looks so much better anyway.

Was the Army of Northern Virginia at all active in SC?

Anyway, having that flag displayed prominently on the Capitol grounds is not a good idea, simply because of what it ends up suggesting to a large number of its people - that they are not full citizens with full rights to their government.  And that is a problem.  If it were somewhere else, it could be appropriate.

Racists shouldn't be compromised with, no. Seems reasonable enough to me.

So, basically, a mass shooting in America leads to Americans debating regulations on... flags.

The reasonable solution is stay out of everyone's business.  It's a flag not a machine gun.

If it's flying on public property it's everyone's collective business, there's no way to stay out of it.
