So recently, Kasich said this about the GOP's focus on abortion:

He later had this to say about Roe v. Wade:

I guess he is one who is not comfortable talking about the issue, and tries to deflect.  He has signed a lot of anti-abortion legislation as governor.

Kasich just about clinched his departure from the race.  He's de facto pro-choice now.

If I'm wrong; if Kasich thrives in this race despite this position, it's a sign that the GOP is seriously willing to offer itself to the Religious Right on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.  They really have nothing to lose; the Religious Right won't switch to the Democrats and they're not likely to launch a 3rd party.  They're really a lesser-of-two-evils crowd when it's nut-cutting time.

It used to be that Dems switched from being pro-life to pro-choice to run for national office (Gore, Kucinich, Jackson etc), and Pubs do the opposite. Does Kasich know which party he's in?

Oh well, narrowed my supportable list for me....

McCain took this same position around 2002 when he was loved by Democrats and flirting with an independent run in 2004. He later switched back of course when he actually wanted to win the GOP nomination. Still, he got surprisingly little s for his blatant flip flopping.

Well he hasn't cornered himself just yet, but he is going to have to illustrate that he supports protecting the unborn who he just simply will not be the nominee.

It was almost 16 years ago to the day that McCain made a very similar comment during his 2000 presidential campaign:

I'm failing to see how these statements are particularly pro-choice.

He is accepting Roe v. Wade as the law of the land.  He is giving up on any kind of Constitutional Amendment, and there is no talk of appointing SCOTUS Justices to overturn Roe.

That's pretty much throwing in the towel when you think about it.

It is the law of thel and right now, and all he said was you have to respect current law. That doesn't mean he doesn't also support changing it.

Very good answer on the first question, but perhaps a bit too much moderation on the second.

His state of Ohio already decided that Roe was settled law, when they passed a 20 week abortion ban. He's not gonna turn around and say that he supports a constitutional amendment banning it.

... Still anti-choice, but this makes Progress. Something like ~40% of Republicans are pro-choice, and at least enough more don't care enough for him to still get a majority.

Yeah, I'm done with supporting Kasich for now at least. I've apologized for him for too long. I was hoping he would be the compassionate conservative candidate, but he can't seem to find the necessary backbone to go with it these days. He recently also said he is not a marshmallow. Bad jokes about teachers' lounges aside (?), it's time he stop acting like a marshmallow.

If he's doing this now, you think he will magically change if elected?

Of course, he's not getting elected any more than you or I are.

I had expected him to act as he has acted throughout his career as Governor of Ohio. He's not been a firebrand clearly, but he typically has managed to actually stand for something.
