Quote
Jump forward two millennia and Italy now wants to play a pivotal role in the new Silk Road being created by Chinese President Xi Jinping. But joining the latest incarnation is proving controversial and risky for Rome’s modern-day masters.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte plans to sign a preliminary accord when Xi visits Rome next week, hooking Italy up to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) - a colossal, multi-billion-dollar project designed to improve Beijing’s trade reach.

Italy’s drive to be the first Group of Seven industrialized nation to join the ambitious venture has angered Washington and alarmed Brussels, raising fears of a sellout of sensitive technologies and the handover of critical infrastructure.
What does the current coalition in government of Italy seek to gain from a closer relationship with China? Is this the carving out of Europe, in which long-standing alliances and world systems are broken?

*Deputy PM.

Also, of course Italy would be the first EU country to fully fall into the China orbit.

Nationalists in Europe often see US hegemony as the biggest threat to their national sovereignty. They believe their nation's stand to benefit from a multipolar world. This is why they frequently end up siding with Russia or China, not out of some principle of liking or agreeing with these governments, but because playing to all sides gives greater international leverage and autonomy.

Possibly because China is turning into the world's next superpower? Being anti-China at this point in time is only going to hurt a nation in the long run.

The Italians are smart enough to realize the U.S. has become an unreliable partner.

Is there any European country that isn’t full of pathetic traitors? I oppose Trumps efforts to dismantle NATO until I see things like this. Let them fend for themselves if they take this route.

The UK is involved in this via the weekly freight train from China to the UK. With three lots of trans-shipping along the way, mind, due to two gauge changes and the limited number of Channel Tunnel compliant flat beds.

With a rising Far-Right that resent America for the 1940’s, better expect more incidents to happen. Before the dominoes fell on Hungary, now Italy, and my money is now on Austria being eventually next.

Hasn't Italy traditionally been friendly to communist or left-wing authoritarian governments? It was only thanks to Berlusconi that they didn't sidle up to China over a decade ago when China was a hotter economy than it is now.

Italy is a sovereign country and should do what is in its own interest.

Let them fend for themselves if they take this route.
Gladly.

The name we give to it in French is way more appealing and romantic...

'Les Nouvelle Routes de la Soie' ('The New Silk Roads')

But, well, not sure it's enough to really make it appealing...

That kind of 'Yellow Fever' never really managed to make it through in France so far, but what apparently became Le Sentier or Aubervilliers would show that u dont need big politico-economical decisions for the roads to be on their way here either

Nah, nothing like this, Le Pen loves as much Trump as Putin, and i guess it's more or less the same case for Salvini and the like

2020 is supposed to be next year which means that Cold War, the 1990s, and even the 2000s, are over for a while actually
