Skipped 24, I thought it was a really stupid question but I may get back to it at a later date for completion, but for now I don't want to deal with the question.

This question was altered by me quite a bit, the original question is "We need to get out of the Iraq War". Obviously, since the Iraq War is over (even though a new one is currently present) I think a better question would be when should we have withdrew, if at all? Its related to the original and I think its a better finder of dove vs hawk on foreign policy.

Strongly Agree

If I recall correctly, Obama campaigned on getting out of Iraq within 18 months of taking office. This did not happen and he ended up using the 'Bush Plan' of 3 years.

Not suprisingly, he was attacked by the GOP both times.

Strongly agree.

I think we missed the opportunity to surge when it was initially called for - spring 2004. That was when the US found itself no longer just battling the remnants of Hussein's forces, but in new engagements with Shia militias in Sadr City and Sunni militias in Fallujah.

A new strategy to stabilize Iraq was needed, and McCain even called out Defense for an insufficient plan. But troop increases (ie a surge) weren't going to fit a stay-the-course message needed for the 2004 campaign. So instead we turned control over to a new Iraqi government that summer without the necessary underlying stability or a means to exit.

This sums it up well, IMO.
