If the position of Vice President is vacant, which it has been at various points in history, who has the casting vote in the case of a tie in the Senate?

This may be written down somewhere, but I'm too lazy to go find out.

The bill fails 50-50, 49-49, 48-48, whatever. You need a majority, and only the vice president can break the tie, constitutionally.
