What i can tell from this map is that the
US is blue
Canada and Australia are green
South American, Europe and Asia are purple
And a few random places are black.

Lacking a color key thats about all I can determine. Is the key missing or is my browser simply not displaying it?

Light Blue is 1000K + troops
Green/Blue is 100+ troops
Dark Green has a minor presence
Purple has no presence

Why is Cuba at Zero?  We lease Gitmo from them.

Technically that's not a lease but a life rent, or right of beneficiary.
So, maybe they consider it part of the US.

Nope, it was argued that the US constitution doesn't apply to Gitmo.  Cuba would like it back if it's considered part of Cuba.

I'm trying to figure out how the US "controls" Australia with less than 1000 troops.

Dood, the aussie army has like 30000 people.

I was referring the less than 1000 American troops stationed there.

It is unseemly for the lord to mock the serfs.  Remember it is completely free to pretend that the fellow under your heel isn't in fact under your heel, and potentially costly to remind him of the fact though wanton and tactless taunting.  If you pretend he is not oppressed, and in fact your 'equal', his pathetic hubris will do nearly all your police-work for you.

Honestly, this map should not come as a surprise.  We're not really in danger of Canada invading us, so naturally we attempt to broker deals to allow us to deploy our troops internationally.  This allows us to pressure governments like China and North Korea with immediate-response capability.

Opedo is the only one that would accuse any country with 100 American troops of being a colony.

I wonder if my browser is displaying the same thing yours is. Thefactors post shows a key in the lower left which does not include purple. Only green, blue and black.

Although America has forces and military stations in these areas it does not actually control them! It may have large influence over these areas but does not run them. This is the key difference between the "American"  and British Empire. Whilst Britannia controlled Canada, India and parts of Africa, america only has bases there. Having a Empire means controlling these places!  Arguably you could state that it controls the countries economically but China could easily destroy the American Economy by asking for all the something trillion America owes them back.

Also this pie chart is wrong. Britain had the largest Empire so should cover more area than Russia.
