Today, Bart van U. confessed to having murdered former Dutch minister and D66 leader Els Borst. At the age of 81, she was stabbed to death with a knife in her Bilthoven home. Borst, a physician herself, had been Health Minister between 1994 and 2002, serving in both purple cabinets. In addition to that, she had been Deputy Prime Minister in the second purple cabinet (1998-2002).

As Health Minister, she had been responsible for legalizing euthanasia in the Netherlands, which might be the most important milestone in her political career. Two days after this had passed in parliament, exactly in the time of Easter, Borst gave an interview to Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad and said the words "It has been done", which to many Christians, who generally oppose euthanasia, added insult to injury. Borst apologized for this in parliament, but in public perception she remained an anti-religious person. Two years ago, a Christian minister sparked outrage by saying Borst's death had been caused by God because she had been an "angel of death".

Technically, Van U. had already confessed to the murder, but he had not yet told about his motives. Today, he stated that "divine inspiration" told him to kill Borst because she had been responsbile for legalizing euthanasia. Last year, Van U. had already confessed to having killed his own sister.

A disgusting affair, and I am shocked this has happened in the Netherlands.

I wonder why god wanted him to bump off his sister?

What an awful excuse for a human being.

He killed his sister by stabbing her 40 times because he said he felt "threatened" by her; according to him, it was "self-defense", but it remains unclear why he felt that way. After this murder, it was found that his DNA matched with the DNA in the case of Els Borst, which is how they discovered it.
