Antonin Scalia has been confirmed dead, at the age of 79.

How does this influence the 2016 race?

The Supreme Court will become one of the top issues. I could easily see another government shutdown happening.

It makes a Democratic victory this year even more likely.

If McConnell, etc., agree to ANYONE Obama appoints, no matter how moderate, expect an absolute meltdown from the Republican candidates.

If Cruz shuts down the government to prevent the appointment ... he gets the nomination but is shellacked by Hillary in the general?

So the GOP will block any appointment until the election, right?

Think about how the events would logically play out. Obama nominates somebody, conservatives freak out, attempt government shutdown, etc.

Why would a shutdown or even a filibuster be necessary? The Reps can simply vote down anyone they find too liberal for the slot.

They just have to keep from losing five votes, and this isn't the cabinet - very few GOP Senators are going to vote for an Obama SC nominee in this climate. Especially as Obama even voted down
Roberts to replace Rehnquist. He hasn't earned Presidential courtesy on SC nominees in his last year.

If anything, this could be a boon for Trump's chances in the general, no? Republicans couldn't afford to not vote for him.

He's saying that primary voters will now prioritize November electability over all other issues.

I can imagine Cruz using this to emphasize conservative values (against Trump).

Obviously the Supreme Court will be an issue.  The Republicans will be sure to let its conservative base know what's at stake, and hopefully Democrats can figure out how to mobilize the progressive base, and also sway voters on the fence who are not happy with the Court's recent far swing to the right.  Hopefully Democrats can communicate to moderate voters who oppose such decisions as Citizens United that keeping the White House in Democratic hands is vital.

RIP to one of the greatest SCOTUS Justices of all time (behind Brandeis, Rehnquist, and T. Marshall)

They will probably do a formal filibuster to play it safe - The "Reid Nuclear Option" contained an exception for SCOTUS nominees - you still need 60 votes to override a filibuster on a SCOTUS nominee - so that's an allowance of thirteen for the republicans. Much safer than the allowance of three they'd have without it. (A 50-50 tie would be broken by Biden in Obama's favor)
