Given that Kasich is doing better than he did, and that Huntsman is the real deal, he could have at least had a somewhat honorable defeat by Super Tuesday.

No, the GOP field was so overcrowded this year. He would have gone nowhere.

No. The addition of more candidates would have made it easier, not harder, for Trump to win the nomination.

Kasich took his "I'm a nice guy" thing, plus there was always the rumors of Romney getting in, and if Romney got in, Huntsman would be pointless.

Okay, how well would he have done if Kasich hadn't run?

I think despite being a better candidate and person in general, he would have done worse than Kasich, probably. He had his reputation from 2012 and working for Obama that would have held him back.

Another squishy moderate - establishment type would not have worked.

The article's point is basically that Kasich isn't as moderate/centrist/appealing to liberals as Huntsman. That is not the problem with Kasich's candidacy.

Granted it also makes the point that Huntsman has a more appealing personality, which is a little more debatable, but I don't think Huntsman's personality would have worked very well in the Trump primary.
