MADISON, Wis. - Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle vetoed a Republican bill Wednesday that would have dedicated part of a highway in Wisconsin to President Reagan.

The measure would have designated the portion of U.S. Highway 14 from Madison to the Wisconsin-Illinois border as the Ronald Reagan Highway.

Doyle said in a statement that tradition demands highways and bridges in Wisconsin be named only for Wisconsin-born citizens or state residents. Lawmakers in the past have followed that precedent to avoid politicizing highway names, the governor said.

I found it funny that this was considered newsworthy.

Yeah, politically a pretty dumb move on his part.  He's going to have a fight on his hands as it is according to poll numbers that I've been seeing.  Most people respect Reagan if they don't agree with him, and Doyle vetoing this will come across as petty and partisan.

This is a year old. It only passed the legislature because the Republicans control both branches.

Thank God for Doyle! The Republicans won't be satisfied until they named every airport, highway, coin, outhouse, henhouse and treehouse in this country after that terrible President. He was a human being, not a deity.

I think we should ban naming public places after people who have died less than, say, 50 years before? Then we could not have a JFK anything until November 22, 2013 or Reagan anything until, say, June 9, 2054. Just  naming things after living people would be like Saddam Hussein naming Baghdad International Airport after himself. We can't evolve into a personality cult.

I'm sure there are plenty of things named after McKinley, particularly from his time era.

Even Garfield has stuff named after him...

Howabout the highest mountain on the North American continent?

Or is that a different McKinley? Either way, it's a pretty big honour, and trumps anything named after Kennedy.

I doubt that that was named for McKinley but even if it was, it still doesn't match the number of things named after Kennedy and the unnecessary praise he receives for so many things.

Something even dumber is the Minnesota Taxpayers League wants to rename the Floyd B. Olson Highway the Ronald Reagan Highway.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense, rename something named after one of the state's best and most beloved governors after a President who never even carried the state.

Why was Wisconsin going to name a stretch of highway for a President who had no connection with the state?  And a highway?  That's a pretty dumb thing to have dedicated to anybody.  What, will Reagan forever be remembered as the "Highway President"?

Same thing can apply to anything outside Massachusetts named for Kennedy if you want.

Doyle just guaranteed that 95%+ of Republicans will never vote for him.

I'd say they'll be more torn between Doyle protecting the traditions of the state, and with further deifying a dead president.

Argh, just another 4,000 votes and we could have shut Mondale out of everywhere but DC!

Rumor was that Reagan didn't campaign as much in MN as to not personally embarass mondale...

not that a 49 state victory wasn't enough.

Reagan's pilot is the source on that, as I recall.  Reagan did not want to ampaign in MN, but was talked into scheduling one campaign stop there so his state staff could meet him.  He was forced to cancel it when AF1 was forced to divert.

So their aren't any MLK Aves or Blvds in Wisconsin, correct?
