Aside from the the hatred towards him by Labour, there's no reason to stop him running for leader and becoming PM. There's not even a rule that the PM has to be an MP (it's almost like Speaker in the US)

Technically no, but I just can't see the established convention being set aside, unless of course one pulls Alec Douglas-Home (a quick by-election).
