I have an impression that in today's political world, it is more advantageous for a politician to say what he or she truly believes, as opposed to what people want to hear, which was advantageous decades ago. For example, in the 2004 election, this issue helped Bush and hurt Kerry.

To what extent is this perception accurate or inaccurate?

If what you were saying is true, Trump never would've stood a chance and Bernie would've won enough Western and Northeast states to override Hillary in the delegate count.

No, its pretty clear that "what people want to hear" is precisely the best method to win... it's just that there are two bases to pander too and a politician has to sound like they believe what they say, because that is what they want to hear.

Better yet, convince yourself of what people want to hear and spew that. Most people are malleable enough to make it work.

Then how did saying "what people want to hear" hurt Kerry in 2004 while saying "what he believed" help Bush?

The GOP says what their base wants to hear, which lines up with what they believe. The Dems say what Dallas billionaires want to hear.

The key is to say what people want to hear, but make it sound like you believe it.
