Elections, including presidential elections, are to be held on May 15th.
Previously, the Dominican Republic had a somewhat stable party system: Dominican Liberation Party (left-wing populist, vaguely Chavez-y), Dominican Revolutionary Party (social democrat), and the Christian Social Reform Party (conservative, supporters of the pre-democracy ancien regime).
That's all gone to hell now though and I'm not sure what the hell is going on.
Incumbent President Danilo Medina of the Dominican Liberation Party looked safe for re-election a little while ago but now he's facing a serious threat from Luis Abinader of the new Modern Revolutionary Party, which appears to be a new reformist leftist party which broke away from the Dominican Revolutionary Party because it was suffering typical post-capitalist social democratic party rot.
The Dominican Revolutionary Party itself does not seem to be running a candidate at all.
