I've been working on some concept designs for the Flag of the North to propose for the Assembly.  Please only vote in this poll if you are registered in the Northern Region.  Results will be shown in three days.

Flag 1:

Description: Attributed to the culture of sailing and fishing in Northern lakes and oceans, this flag depicts a sail in a ring of fourteen stars, each representing a constituent state.

Flag 2:

Description: In tribute to the rich agriculture history of the region, Northern folk hero Johnny Appleseed is the figure depicted at the center of the flag (Appleseed is based on a real-life pioneer who introduced apple trees to parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois)

(If adopted, the flag would possibly include the name of the region written on the flag as well as an official motto)

Flag 3:

Description: A simple outline encompassing the constituent states of the region lies at the center of the map.  As with the second map, this concept may include the name and/or motto of the region accompanying the image.

I like the third the most, but not the colors.

Technically, if we were to infer from both CARCA maps adopted and the overall color scheme used in it, the ConCon map discussions/adoption and the political leanings of the Region, it should probably feature red instead. Tongue This is why when I updated the Wiki, the Northeast is now red; the South green; the West blue. Although my dislike for the current flag colors has to do with pastel-y disdain.

The third one. Flags should be simple.

Are we going to have a flag referendum? Cheesy

I prefer the first design out of them, but I think the flag ratio should match the others.

Personally, I'd prefer a flag that is more traditional in terms of its color scheme. Two alternative proposals:

The alternating pattern of blue, red, and white stripes is derived from the Franklin Flag, the naval ensign used by John Paul Jones during the American Revolution. This references the North's history as a maritime region, as well as the birthplace of Benjamin Franklin (among other distinguished founders). The number of stripes - fourteen - is equal to the number of states in the Region. In the canton, the white cross upon a blue background with a pine tree upper left hand corner references the Bunker Hill Flag - again, an allusion to our Revolutionary heritage.

The same as above, but with fourteen white stars in the canton in place of the white cross and pine tree.

No offense, Truman, but those are eyesores. Flags are meant to be simple and easy on the eyes. All these different colored stripes and everything are no good.

None taken. Would a solid red field be any better?

I love the subtle Britishness and Christianness of this flag. The canton almost evokes Gallipoli and the Greek War of Independence.

Of course, that means it could never fly (literally) in the secular humanist North. Wink

I'd back the second of these flags

For a motto, may I suggest "Populus, Populi". This literally translates to "By the people, of the people".

I like the sailing theme of the first flag. Our states have shores on the Great Lakes or Atlantic Ocean. Vermont doesn't but has a lake on its west side.

FWIW, this is something I had in mind for those who'd like a flag more stripe-y and rectangular-y:

Thoughts?
