Chester Arthur gets dropped from the 1884 Republican ticket due to his health problems. Meanwhile, President Garfield's opposition to restrictions on Chinese immigration energize racists throughout the U.S., but especially in the Western U.S. (where most Chinese-Americans lived during this time). Thus, President Garfield loses California, Nevada, Oregon, and Colorado as well as the popular vote while winning the electoral vote by a one vote margin as a result of his
extremely narrow victory in New York state.
