-- This topic is not about the plausibility of such a scenario

Many americans are perplexed about how Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan, for instance, can still support Trump when they find themselves denouncing his comments again and again. But let's flip the situation and see how strong party loyalty is.

I know asking Atlas Dems if they would vote for Bernie would be a resounding yes, even if I polled among only those who supported Clinton in the primary. Most here have apparently convinced themselves that Bernie is a capitalist even though he calls himself a socialist, so asking that question would be pretty useless here.

So let's go to another degree here. Let's say that an outright communist won the democratic nomination in 2016. Not someone who just calls themselves one, but someone who is clearly a communist. They rally against not just trade deals, but all aspects of private industry. They propose guaranteed employment, basic income, health care, and etc. They and their VP pick are atheists and very clear about it. They openly support limiting freedom of speech and religion and say the first amendment is "seriously misguided". They propose government ownership of most or all industries. In addition to the communist stuff, they refuse to release their tax returns and say they would ban evangelical Christians from immigrating to the country and prevent those already in the country from ever serving in political office - but support completely open borders in all other respects. Let's say this person didn't receive many establishment endorsements during the primaries but ultimately won due to a strong advantage in pledged delegates that convinced just enough superdelegates to go along with the choice at the convention. The D party as a whole isn't happy with the nominee, but party leaders and elected officials are generally saying you have to go along with it because of the supreme court and the terrible R nominee. There is a small #NEVERCOMMUNIST faction, but only a very small part of that has actually endorsed the R nominee.

The republican nominee is Ted Cruz. His positions are the same as they are in real life, as are his favorability ratings and personality.

Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, and Darrell Castle are still the nominees of their respective parties.

Democrats, what would you do?

No, because I am closer to a communist than I am to Ted Cruz the Theocratic Fascist.

Gary Johnson. If it makes them feel any better, I was supporting them until they wanted to repeal the first amendment. That is inexcusable.

I don't think Cruz is a good analogy. Jeb Bush would seem to be the most accurate comparison to Hillary. Gaffe-prone legacy politician but fairly moderate by their party's standards and with a long history in public service.

I'm tempted to resume my ironic CRUZ support for the occasion (that's always fun!) but the fact you seem to mean this seriously kind of scares me.

Clinton was well to the left of her Senate caucus; that she is considered part of the 'moderate' wing of her party now only reflects how far to the left the Democrats have moved since then.

The exact same could be said of Jeb.

Having gotten to know people who worked with Ted Cruz fifteen years ago, I can assure you that he does not have principles. In fact, I'd argue that Jeb of all people is more principled, and I am no fan of him.

I would probably vote for Gary Johnson, while hoping that anyone but Cruz won. I would fear for my life under a Cruz administration, but not the Democrat's administration.

Cruz would have been an utterly fantastic President.  Still a shame he wasn't the nominee. Sad  Very glad I casted my vote for him.

In the scenario given by the OP, I would vote for Gary Johnson. It's not like Indiana would be remotely competitive in any case.

Out of curiosity, is Cruz's running mate Mitch Daniels, Jon Huntsman, Chris Christie, Scott Brown or someone similar?

Trump already supports limiting free speech and religious liberty, so he's halfway there.
