Five states — Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada — will decide whether to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Four other states — Arkansas, Florida, Montana and Missouri — will decide whether to allow doctors to prescribe marijuana for medicinal use.

My guess is it will pass in all 5 states trying to legalize. Which would bring the number up to 9 states, plus DC. While, medical will pass in Arkansas (almost passed the last time it was on the ballot) and Montana. Not sure about Florida (takes 60%) and Missouri (would probably guess yes).

When will Illinois join the bunch? Aren't we supposed to be liberal or something?

I anxiously look forward to seeing what happens when pot is legalized firsthand. It'll be interesting to see how things go, especially in a state like California.

California should be able to pass with around 55-56%. The state Democratic Party endorsed it, Newsom is anchoring his gubernatorial run to it, and a much larger & younger electorate than 6 years ago.

Feinstein and the police unions have gone all in with stopping it, but they've been losing influence in these law enforcement propositions lately.

I believe it will easily pass in Nevada and Maine. I'm not sure about its chance in Massachusetts and I'm not that optimistic with Arizona

Of course Rhode Island is going to let Massachusetts get ahead of them again.

AK may or may not not pass medical marijuana, but FL, MT, and MO probably will. ME, MA, NV, and CA should all pass it, though it will be close in NV and (maybe) ME. AZ won't legalize weed.

As expected, the DEA refuses to budge on medical marijuana rescheduling.

You can and will vote your conscience, but I will tell you that in Oregon (Where I currently live), as well as other states like Washington and Colorado, there has not been an epidemic of teenage kids consuming marijuana (In fact I think the numbers of High School students that are Juniors or Seniors has significantly declined since the 1980s), but rather adults can go to the equivalent of a liquor store and purchase a small quantity to consume in the privacy of their own homes.

Additionally there have been somewhere like $200 Million going towards the state general fund towards education and substance abuse prevention, not to mention much more money saved in excessive costs in terms of court fees and the like, as well as diverting law enforcement efforts in other directions, rather than busting some teenage kids on the street smoking a joint.

So, pray tell why are you still in favor of prohibition unless it is only on moral grounds? Should we ban alcohol and tobacco as well, despite the preexisting "sin tax"?

This issue brings out my libertarian side, and I think it will pass in all except Florida where it needs to hit 60 %.

60% is the threshold. Morgan's initiative got 57.xx% in 2014 with a more conservative electorate, so it should pass this year. He made changes to alleviate lines of attack the measure's opponents were using, and support for the measure is very high, which will undoubtedly be aided by increased Democratic turnout.

I think the"69" may have just been wishful thinking on his part.

Of the states that have not yet legalized weed, annual consumption (% of adults that imbibed within the past year) is as follows based upon a CBS Study:

1.) Vermont (16%)
2.) New Hampshire (15%)
3.) Massachusetts (15%)
4.) Rhode Island (14%)
5.) Maine (14%)
6.) California (13%)
7.) New York (13%)
8.) Connecticut (13%)
9.) Montana (12%)
10.) Michigan (12%)
11.) Hawaii
12.) Delaware (12%)

Another Study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) where I eliminated states where herb is already legal on rates of adult consumption within the past year:

1.) Rhode Island
2.) Vermont
3.) Montana
4.) Massachussets
5.) California

So based upon these statistics, I suspect that legalization will pass in Mass, Maine, and Cali with an extremely good chance of passing in NV (Libertarian social perspectives) and may or may not pass in Arizona....

It looks like there are some states in New England and Montana where we can expect significant movement in the future, however not all of these states make it easy to put issues on the ballot, so would likely have to pass through the state legislatures....

This isn't regarding the referendums on the issue taking place this year, but does anyone know if there any chance that Marijuana is legalized nationwide via Supreme Court?

Unfortunately, probably not.  Unwise as it may be, there's nothing that requires Congress to have it be legal.

I'll be voting YES in Massachusetts and the reason is (a) I think busting a bunch of college kids for Mary Jane is a complete waste of law enforcement's time and (b) it will bring more revenue into the state.  I was going to vote No because of the stench of that stuff - it's terrible

I also think the War on Drugs isn't working.
