...is that Americans will never elect a third-party candidate to the White House.

Not since 1912 has there been a pair of Presidential and Vice-Presidential nominees both qualified for President -- and the Johnson/Weld ticket has no chance despite perhaps the worst nominee for President by a major Party.

It could be that they are underfunded.

Not necessarily. The reason third parties won't do well this year is because voters, whatever their issues with their party's candidate might be, utterly HATE the other's and are terrified of the idea of them winning. Voting third party is a gamble: either you win or the worst candidate wins. Clearly the risks are too high for people this year.

The reason Perot could do so well in 1992 is because parties didn't hate one another that much back then.

If Bush had gotten the REP nomination and Trump was running Indy, what do you think the breakdown would be now for Clinton, Bush, Trump?

The problem with all these what ifs about Bush, Kasich, etc is those guys couldn't even muster a second place finish.  Rubio dropped out long before Kasich and he still had more delegates than Kasich.  Ben Carson had more delegates than Bush.  BEN CARSON.  There is no point talking about Kasich, Bush or any of those other losers.  This is clearly the party of Trump and Ted Cruz.

There's a decent case it happened in 1860, no?

No.  The Republican Party had already placed a respectable second in 1856.  Whenever people claim this about the 1860 election, I ask who they consider the 'second' party to be?

Plus they had control of the House, or at least the most seats.
