Comparing AMLO to Trump is the dumbest hot take I've ever seen.

Yeah. If you for some reason wanted to compare it to someone, your best bet would be left wing populists. For those you could either compare him with European ones (Pablo Iglesias, Jean Luc Melenchon, Jeremy Corbyn) or Latin American ones (basically those from the "pink tide": Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Hugo Chávez/Nicolás Maduro, Evo Morales, Lula da Silva/Dilma Rouseff or Rafael Correa/Lenin Moreno)

Actually, it is the AMLO voters who need a US or another additional passport: they will not want to live in Mexico he will create. Nor, of course, will the rest of us.

Poor North America. Two Trumps at the same time. Canada is the last remaining hope of the continent!

Can you do a TL;DR about why AMLO is so bad?

I mean yes, he could end up like Chavez. But doesn't Mexico have a 6 year term limit? Unless he gets a majority in parliament (which iirc isn't likely) he doesn't seem that bad, he will have his hands tied. (kind of reminds me to the French election, where even if Le Pen had won, she would have her hands tied by parliament. Except AMLO has a chance while Le Pen didn't)

Definitely a left wing Mexican Trump but still. Is the opposition that much better? Peńa Nieto is definitely very unpopular. Was Calderón also quite unpopular when he left? If so then it's no wonder people will vote for AMLO.

Seems like AMLO will vote for as a write-in candidate Rosario Ibarra de Piedra.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosario_Ybarra

Who is a long time Far Left activist and a PRD Senator a decade ago.

Wait, can't AMLO vote for himself? Or is that for Congress?

Honestly if I were Mexican I guess I could support AMLO for president, but certainly wouldn't vote for his party for Congress. He certainly shouldn't get a majority and unchecked power.

Now that I think about it, couldn't Morena-PT-PES have tried to run multiple candidates in states where they would get a landslide, in order to take all 3 of the Senate seats? (instead of just 2). Granted that would be hard to organize and it's a risky strategy but if done correctly it would have meant a massive majority.

For example in Tabasco the results seem to be:

Morena-PT-PES: 67.67%
PAN-PRD-MC: 12.67%
PRI: 11.65%
PVEM: 3.34%
PANAL: 1.21%

So even assuming a 3-1 distribution for "alternative Morena" they could have still swept all seats:

Real Morena-PT-PES: 50.76%
Alternative Morena-PT-PES: 16.91%
PAN-PRD-MC: 12.67%
PRI: 11.65%
PVEM: 3.34%
PANAL: 1.21%
