They have Idaho pegged, this is "pop" country.  It's wierd to see that Blaine County, the only Gore/Kerry county, is also the only "soda" county.

Ah good old Milwaukee area, we all say Soda here, if you say pop or coke (unless your saying it about the brand soda) you're laughed at. My dad says pop though, weirdo. Tongue

I see that Victoria is completely green in the Pop vs. Soda site, and that's exactly my experience.  I've called it "pop" all my life and I know of absolutely no one from there who doesn't.  If you call it "soda", people will probably look at you slightly weird (and probably assume you're American), and if you call it "coke", nobody is going to have a clue that you're not talking about Coca-Cola.

Going to some of the places that call it "coke" might be a bit confusing...

"Gimme a Coke."
"What kind?"
"What?  I want a Coke."
"Yeah, what kind of coke?"
"Uh..."
(etc.)

Nah it usually goes:
"What would you like to drink?"
"A Coke"
"What kind?"
"Sprite"
You get used to it i guess.

No, the guy asking for a Coke is me, who had no idea whatsoever that a "Coke" was the term for a generic soft drink.

While there is strong regionalization, I'm not seeing a link to the presidential results.

Note PA.  Kerry won "soda" Phila, and lost soda counties mid state.  He lost most of the western PA "pop" counties, but won "pop" Allegheny.

I'm in the Other category, as I'm weird and call them Soft Drinks.

But if I had to choose between the three, I am definitely in the Soda camp.

You 'pop' people are just weird.

I call them "soft drinks". I don't belong in any quarter of the US!

Southerners calling soft drinks "coke" is justifiable, as the proper noun just became a common noun, like "Xerox" for photocopier, "Dumpster" for waste receptacle, etc.

Yankees who say "soda" annoy me, but that term is justifiable as well. The Georgia doctor was, after all, trying to synthesize European soda water.

But no reason at all can explain why Midwesterners/Canadians call soft drinks 'pop.' That word grates the ear, and doth mockes the meat it feasts upon.

I hate when people call it "pop." I just associate that word with other things, generally short for "popular."

Soda or soft drinks come close to what we usually called them.

Coke for all of them? Well, that's just southern...

Because that word is awesome.  It's a one-syllable word that ends in a hard consonant that perfectly fits a crisp, carbonated beverage.  "Soda" is a wussy word that sounds like what one might call it after it's gone completely flat.

I usually say "soft drink" which is the number 4 answer but it's way behind the top 3. If I don't use soft drink I usually use pop since, well, I grew up in a pop saying area, the Midwest. So I'm a Soft Drink/Pop person.
