Goldwater/JFK

Landslide for JFK, but a bit less than LBJ's:

PB, JFK would get his ass handed to him in the South- especially since he was going to drop Johnson as his running mate. We've (sort of) had this thread before, BTW, so I'll just post my previous map:

JFK wins 55-45 in the popular vote. Map:

Kennedy wins 344-194, but Goldwater sweeps the South and runs strong in the Plains and Mountain West.

I think he supported a flat tax; not sure, though.

What did Goldwater think about taxes?

Goldwater opposed the 1961 Kennedy tax cut.  He wanted to raise taxes to balance the budget.

http://www.cato.org/pubs/policy_report/pr-so-ev.html

Lee Edwards spoke about "Barry Goldwater: The Once and Future Libertarian" at a Book Forum honoring publication of his new book, Goldwater: The Man Who Made a Revolution. Edwards pointed out that Goldwater's 1964 presidential platform, which included a call for a flat tax, privatization, elimination of farm subsidies, and voluntary Social Security, is today at the center of the public policy debate.

Goldwater may have supproted flat taxes in principle, but as Jude Wanniski recalls:

"You're all too young to remember, but Barry Goldwater's 1964 campaign featured ATTACKS on the Kennedy tax cuts that passed that year, tax cuts which brought the top income-tax rate to 70% from 91%."

Bad 4 years:

Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont go to Kennedy. Goldenshower was (is) too much of an extremist for the mid sixties.

You've got to be kidding me. Do you really think that Goldwater would pull numbers that large in 1964 even if Kennedy had survived, or hadn't been shot.

Basically if Kennedy is shot and survives its a huge landslide if it's not then it's slightly less of one.

Kennedy would have done badly in the South. Consider the 1960 result and then presume that Kennedy does WORSE than that. However, he would have swept the Northeast and Northwest. AND the Midwest.

The real 1964 results aren't too different from this hypothetical match-up.
