i will say if bismark had been running things in 1914 they would have beaten france fairly quickly.
none of that "miracle of the marne" stuff.

You mean he wouldn't have transferred troops to the East front? Or what? I am inclined to disagree, I think the Schlieffen plan was flawed from the out-start. And that France was ready to keep fighting for much longer.

Schlieffen Plan was of course flawed. It relied on the assumption that France would fall easily, a pretty big assumption, along with the assumption that Russia would be slow to mobilise, an equally great assumption in my opinion.

That they did. They fell into the Cannes trap. Smiley Schlieffen's last words are said to have been something aong the lines of "Keep the right wing strong". Wink

Russia did fail, but I'm not sure France would have.
