Thaksin did the same thing with drug dealers in Siam before he was deposed. I don't recall it being a big issue at the time.

Uh, is that because the name change was initially done by a WWII Japanese-allied military dictatorship that wasn't recognized by the Allies until 1949? It's a weird political statement, no real movement or party insists on calling it Siam, unlike the Burma/Myanmar thing.
