This is what it's going to look like. Pence essentially trying to deny everything that Trump stood for and/or said while there's glaring evidence that he did.

I believe that if you're sharing a ticket with someone, you should be able to defend them whether you agree or not. Simply covering your ears and saying "it's not there" will just under mind what the public already knows. This is going to be the main takeaway from the VP debate if there is any significant takeaway at all.

"When Kaine challenged Pence to defend Trump’s comment that more nations should get nuclear weapons, Pence said “he never said that.” But Trump did.

When Kaine pointed out that Trump had once promised to release his tax returns, Pence replied, “He said he will do it.” Trump has repeatedly said he can’t release his returns because he is being audited by the IRS. (The IRS has said nothing prevents him from releasing them.) There is absolutely no evidence that Trump will actually release his returns. His son, Donald Trump Jr., has admitted that there’s a more political reason the campaign is not releasing the returns: It would be a distraction and create too many “questions.”"

If this proves to be the narrative, then Clinton won this debate.

You have to tip your hat to the commitment of team Trump to deny clear quotes...

It kind of struck me, and I said that during the debate, that Kaine went totally against type and think this was EXACTLY why.

Also, even though Pence is getting some credit from the pundits, almost all the clips they're replaying are favourable to Kaine. Pence had no highlights.

That's why I think Kaine will win this in the immediate long-term. Sure, Pence looked more regal, but that doesn't translate to soundbites and video clips. Pence's refusal to defend Trump will be the story, although as many have noted it won't matter that much anyway.

This actually does give the Clinton campaign the ability to control the narrative of the debate, which is probably what matters most in the long run.

No media outlet is going to play clips talking about how smooth and calm Pence sounded during the debate, they're going to play clips of Pence saying "he didn't say that" followed by the video of Trump saying just that.

Kaine: Donald Trump is six foot two
Pence: *laughs* Tim, this is getting embarassing. Trump is eleven feet tall. Another desperate attack.

Kaine: Donald Trump was born in New York City
Pence: *shakes head* even for you and Hillary Clinton, this is desperate. Trump was born in a tree in the African Safari

This is exactly why I think Kaine won the debate (but barely).
Pence could not defend any of what Kaine was pointing to.
Kaine repeatedly talked about things like nuclear weapons, and how trump wants others to have them. This can be a scary concern to many Americans who are on the fence, and not sure which way to vote.
None of what Kaine said will obviously change the mind of hardened trump supporters (especially the Deplorable ones), but for some independents, topics and issues that Kaine kept repeating may sway them.
(In general though, the VP debate means considerably less than the Presidential debates.)

When Trump gets elected, Arianna Huffington's failing newspaper will leave her for a man who nationalizes it, and it will be a good decision.
