Have you ever actually been to the Vatican? Half of that wall is just colonnade that anyone can walk through at any time. It's not meant to keep people out.

Regardless and for what it's worth, Pope Francis also said this recently on immigration and assimilation:

So... I'm unclear.

Are you saying that the Pope time travelled back hundreds of years to personally build the walls around the Vatican, or are you saying that you're a deplorable idiot?

Yeah, those walls are totally meant to keep out the hordes of rampaging Italians, the Vatican has been under siege from them for millennia...

The Vatican is one of the only countries in the world, if not the only, that anybody not behaving in a self-evidently suspicious manner can literally just walk into whenever they like. The fact that it has (centuries-old, historically and aesthetically significant) walls means nothing when St. Peter's Square is right there, gaping wide.

Subtle, Frankie. Though not quite as subtle as my own church's message to Trump.

Right. Silly me, but, you know, I don't think that really detracts from the point, which is that accusing the Pope of hypocrisy on this because of what the Vatican looks like is absurd.

Again, the Vatican wall was built for military reasons. Are we going to declare war on Mexico?

What does he think of the wall around the Vatican?
Isn't he saying that it is wrong to only think of walls (to divide people) and not think of building bridges (to unite people)? The Vatican built the wall there historically since numerous nations have tried invading the Vatican. It's not some type of scapegoat to try to gain a false sense of security and divide them from the rest of the world.
