..........from leftist ideologue judges who would legislate from the bench.

We will now get judges who respect the United States constitution.

The real activist rulings are right-wing ones like American Tradition Partnership, Inc. v. Bullock.

The judges of any supreme court should not be chosen on the basis of their ideology. The constitution represents all citizens, not just one group.
Judges have the right to have their political tendencies, that's perfectly natural, but it should not be an impediment to approve or pass laws in a rational, fair and practical manner.

Great job republicans, you ensured that no president would be able to nominate a judge in the last year of his presidency if the Senate was controlled by the opposing party

This is probably the part that makes me the most sick; no matter the size of our fightback and victories in the future, and there will be many of them, this will effect our nation for the next 20-30 years. It's heartbreaking.

But the Democrats would have done the exact same thing if they controlled the Senate and a Republican President in the last year of his administration nominated a conservative judge to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

Of that I have no doubt.

Maybe, but more likely the payback is that the next time they control everything, the Dems just add seats 10-13.  Frankly, I don't see how you can de-escalate the SCOTUS fight at this point.

FDR never got away with that, stacking the court, neither would the Dems of today.

Roberts                 61
Kennedy                80
Thomas                 68
Ginsburg               83
Breyer                  78
Alito                     66
Sotomayor            62
Kagan                   56

As you know, there is currently one vacancy since Scalia died, so Trump will make this appointment.

It is very possible, perhaps even likely, that Trump will fill vacancies as well for Kennedy, Ginsburg, and perhaps Breyer.

No. Democrats are temperamentally more cowardly, sorry to say. Give it a few weeks and the obstruction attempt would collapse as they cower before negative media attention. They would cry "look at the polls, this is hurting us" despite the fact the government shutdown didn't hurt republicans. Some of the Stockholm syndrome liberals will cry about moral superiority. Others will find another excuse to bail like "for the good of the country". Again democrats are incapable of holding firm in the face of pressure like republicans.

The only reason I expect the filibuster to be nuked in the coming session is because abortion is just that polarizing, Democrats will feel strong pressure from the base on this issue not to relent.

Well it is certainly good to hear that Democrats are cowardly.

That's not something you hear very often on this leftist propaganda machine.

I suppose if Donald Trump is serious about governing for all Americans, changing the way Washington works and supporting the mandate of the people who voted for him, he should leave the nomination of Merrick Garland in place, as a sensible moderate judge acceptable to all who perfectly the fits the mold of the ninth seat on the court.

If the replacement of Scalia ought to be in the mold of him, surely conservatives wouldn't object to the replacement of Ginsberg being in the mold of her, right?

pubs have...for all their filibuster-whining... .shortened the prez cycle to 3 years and set a dangerous precedent... if schumer accepts judges to the right of kennedy and ayotte, it would approve of those bully tactics.

Id be ok with a west wing style compromise where we get ayoung conservative and young liberal justice simultaneously . As long as we get an actual liberal justice instead of a deference happy empty robe like Breyer or garland.

Of course, this will be a big issue in 2018 and beyond regardless of what happens. Roe v Wade and SSM will be part of the discussion. Even if a future SCOTUS reverses either decisions, the issue will remain. While a majority of Americans support Roe v Wade and SSM, they we likely be decided by individual states and perhaps there will be some chaos and certainly strong feelings.
