Perhaps.  But would a "respectable, sane" Trump have made it through the primaries?

Republicans nominated him precisely because they wanted to burn everything to the ground.

Of course not. His boorish strategy tapped into the desires of boorish Americans. He was a very strong candidate, and Hillary's gotta be kicking herself that she didn't find a way to elevate a worm like Ted Cruz.

This map, however, is certainly within the realm of possibility for 2020.

Yes, that is a very good point. Clean slate with full senate control is what he delivered. Amazing.

A 5-6 point Trump victory would have looked exactly like that.
I don't see any chance of flipping the others.
I know several conservative Christians who voted Write In so it's not out of the realm of possibilities that a sane and effective Trump term could win that big in 2020.

On the other hand, a 5-6 point Dem victory would flip the following:
FL, MI, WI, PA, NC, AZ and possibly GA but NOT OH and IA.

That looks like a Trump re-election map if he's popular.

if he was sane and respectable he wouldn't be Trump.

People liked how unrespectable he was - and he would not have won the nomination had his policies been within the realm of sane.

Yes. He'd be even competitive among Hispanics, since they are "white" hard-working class Smiley

But he probably didn't want us to be tired of winning and to get a headache. What a man!
And 20' would not be that funny, if he won in landslide in 16'.

Stop imagining things. Take a look at exit-polls, polls or other research. For instance, women that voted for him didn't like pussytape, neither did men. The same applies more or less about other "controversial" things, he said.

That is also the map of States Republicans can win Senate races in... In other words they should have an advantage winning up to 70 seats.  Over that would be a reach.

it shows how little the "pussytape" matters, or any of his controversial statements. It only helped him in his "TELLING IT LIKE IT IS" message.

Yep. The policies/consequences should matter more than other stuff. He ran for President, not for Pope.

A respectable, sane Trump would probably have run as a Democrat.

Perhaps if he'd pivoted like was speculated after becoming the nominee it could have happened. If Trump ran a better campaign, with a better convention and won the debates he would likely have done better. Trump's favorability rating was like -20%. He won regardless, and he did well, but I don't think theither actual results were his ceiling.

The catch is that a respectable, richer, less vulgarly attention-seeking Trump would have probably been too little known to run for president. Imagine if Steve Bren, Bill Ross, or Bob Toll were to run for President. Do you know who those are?

Real estate is too unglamourous to make you Bezos, Musk, or Jobs-level famous. It does not produce fortunes large enough to make one as a famous as, say, Warren Buffett either. Maybe he could tone down the vulgarity and tastelessness while remaining well known, and our cameras would today be trained not on Trump Tower but 740 Park or one of the larger townhouses on the UES. But it'd be hard.

This seems possible for a Trump that
1) Did not have Pussygate plus all those women accusers
2) Fought Clinton to a draw at debates
3) Stayed on message and focused on TPP NAFTA etc etc and not wasted time on the Khans etc etc

AND

All the negatives or FBI/emails still take place.

To me sane Trump = the same, but without Kelly/Khan/Curiel/McCain/Cruz wife/rigged election, pussytape and probably similar stuff that I don't recall right now.
